As part of our drive in delivering a unique cross sector decommissioning conference and all the latest news from the industry, we would like to present the first in a series of guest blogs. George Colquhoun (Creator of TotalDECOM) is the perfect guest to kick start the blog series, here he discusses his motivations for creating a cross sector decommissioning event and more about the significant changes that are being rolled out for the 2017 decommissioning event.
Why Setup The Cross Sector Decommissioning Conference, TotalDECOM?
The event is uniquely formatted to cover a range of industries involved in the decommissioning process, including Defence, Renewables, Oil & Gas, Offshore, Waste, Process and Nuclear.
One of the key drivers for creating a cross sector event was to generate a unique opportunity for attendees to network with peers from a range of backgrounds and learn from high profile experts across the decommissioning sector. The intention of TotalDECOM is to facilitate a collaborative process where industries begin to work together to develop solutions based on a larger knowledge pool, whilst creating opportunities for all levels of the supply chain to cross over into new markets and create additional revenue streams.

Another great aspect of this decommissioning event is that it opens the doors for recruitment in an industry that is facing rapid and exponential growth but potentially a notable skills gap, which is set to accelerate in the coming years. By bringing organisations and individuals (including young engineers) together across the sectors, it is hoped that relationships can be forged to develop cost effective and dynamic solutions for the future.
Tell us more about this year’s TotalDECOM event.
As TotalDECOM enters its fourth year, we have rejuvenated the programme and format of the event. Working on the successes of previous years, we have added new features and opportunities to ensure that delegates, sponsors and exhibitors are gaining the most from the event.
For the second consecutive year, TotalDECOM 2017 will be held at The Point, Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester – a fitting location given Manchester’s status as European City of Science and heart of the Northern Powerhouse. The delegate ticket package provides access to our grand opening networking dinner and full access to the exclusive high profile day one conference. Day one has several new aspects (visit the website or follow us on Twitter for news of the full programme as it develops) but the programme stays true to the TotalDECOM objective of providing high calibre speakers, each offering dynamic and relevant insights across the industries.
The largest change to the 2017 conference format, is the introduction of the free entry second day. Thus allowing (preregistered) visitors to enter the exhibition at no cost and have full access to the exhibitor stands. By creating this second element of the conference, we are opening the conference to a wider audience and as such creating an increased return on investment proposition for our Sponsors and Exhibitors due to the forecast increase in footfall. For the second day delegates, as well as the opportunity to visit the exhibition stands, they will be able to take advantage of focused technical/ commercial seminars and professional services workshops. The second day also boasts a high profile Key Note centred on skills and Engineering.
